What's up, Doc: Meet Dr. Abbasy
Dr. Shameem Abbasy is a urogynecologist and robotic surgeon at Swedish Covenant Hospital

This profile is part of a series introducing Swedish Covenant Hospital's physicians to all hospital employees. This is an opportunity to get to know our doctors and better understand their care philosophies.

Dr. Shameem Abbasy is a urogynecologist at Swedish Covenant Hospital and a leader in her field, which combines gynecology and urology. She specializes in treating women's reproductive systems as well as conditions affecting the urinary tract.

If conservative approaches to treatment do not fully address the patient’s needs and surgery is the best treatment option, Dr. Abbasy offers the most advanced minimally invasive laparoscopic and robotic procedures available. She is one of the few physicians in Chicago trained in reconstructive pelvic surgery using da Vinci robotic surgery technology.

What is your practice philosophy?
Most pelvic floor disorders are quality of life issues. They are, generally speaking, not life-threatening. For this reason, I offer my patients many conservative treatment options in addition to surgery.

What can you offer Swedish Covenant Hospital patients?
I offer comprehensive assessment and treatment of pelvic floor disorders. This means that I take into account aspects of each patient’s history that may impact her pelvic floor disorders, such as chronic medical problems, prior surgeries, sexual health, menopause and behavioral health.

What do you like about working at SCH?
I like working with our diverse patient population. I also find Galter Life Center to be an excellent way for patients to address their pelvic floor issues in a non-medical way. The Total Control program is a great option for patients who are looking for a way to improve their pelvic health.

What is your favorite part of your job?
I am always very touched when a patient is finally able to discuss an aspect of their health that they find very difficult to express to anyone. It means I have gained their trust and they have made the first step on the road to recovery.

What do you like to do outside of work?
I love to travel, anywhere and everywhere!
